I may as well admit that I actually watch glee on occasion. Im not going to defend myself, i know its garbage
But what strikes me is just how much autotune is applied to the singers. A friend of mine recently tried out and his song was good but almost plain compared to another video i happened to catch. And what was noticeable almost excruciatingly obvious was the heavy use of autotune. But the second song recieved godfuck many views and votes.
which brings up the question. what is the voice in the modern era? The voice has a legacy of being a beautiful channel of emotion and yet, what does it mean that we can perfect mediocre talents. The skill of being able to recognize and replicate notes is certainly increasingly insignificant despite its glorious value to music. It would seem almost as if vocals were losing touch with “reality”.
Now autotune has its place and function, certainly one could not expect glee to find a cast of people who can sing perfectly and act. And it all goes to the point of entertainment. What I feel is indeteriminately interesting though is the shows ability to produce a reality that is wholly distorted and unreal. I would say its mildly artistic but much of it is merely a representation that we want to see of the teenage experience. It is merely a collection of symbols and thoughts. The work isnt even good much of the show is ridiculous not only in its exaggerations but in what they attempt to characterize.
It is largely a fantasy. an autotuned melodramatic fantasy that happens to look quite a bit like reality. which only goes to say that perhaps reality isnt as real as it used to be
